Asian session

Also calledAsia session · Tokyo session

The Asian session is the period when Asia-Pacific FX trading is active, usually centered on Tokyo and other regional financial centers.

What Asian session means

The Asian session is the part of the global FX day when trading activity shifts to Asia-Pacific markets. Liquidity can be strongest in yen pairs and in currencies linked to the region, while some major pairs trade more quietly than during London or New York. The session is a convention used by traders and brokers.

Asian hours shape overnight price action for traders in Europe and the Americas. They can also matter for pairs tied to Japanese, Australian, or New Zealand markets, and for carry and risk sentiment. Knowing the session helps traders interpret thin liquidity and overnight gaps.

If USD/JPY drifts in a narrow range during the Asian session and then breaks higher during London hours, the earlier move may reflect a quieter market with fewer participants. The session label helps explain the pattern.
